OK, so it was her first book. She published it in 1977, after Johnson had died. She should have waited until Lady Bird was gone too.This book is a diary of an unusual relationship, a betrayal of that relationship. Johnson had given unusual access to a grad student who had written critical things about his Vietnam policies. She was a protégé of his until the end – a chronicler of his days in the White House, and beyond – at his request, at his insistence. But her book feels like the diary of a woman scorned; he gave and he gave and he gave, but it was never enough. It has the feel of an author who is undergoing intensive psychoanalysis, but she hasn’t got to the part about projection yet. In the end, it tells us more about Goodwin than Johnson.Thank heaven, she got better. I wonder what her book would be like if she had written it today.If this is your first book by Goodwin, don’t let it be your last, she is a gifted writer.
